India to UK Immigration 2026: Sponsored Work, Study and the Ballot

Most Indian citizens move to the UK on a sponsored job: the Skilled Worker visa, or the cheaper Health and Care Worker visa for NHS and care roles. Two routes need no employer at all, and one of them is open to Indians and almost nobody else.

The UK is one of the main lanes out of India. Our nationality data records #1: india is the largest source of uk skilled worker visas. The rules are stable: no points lottery, no per-country queue, and a fixed settlement clock once you are in.

The table lists every UK route an Indian citizen can use, with the government fee, processing time and salary floor Transita holds for each.

Skilled Worker: the main route

You need a job offer from a licensed UK sponsor at or above GBP 41,700/yr (≈ $56,462/yr), or the going rate for your occupation if that is higher. The Skilled Worker visa fee we hold is $3,290 and processing takes 1–3 months.

Indian citizens are not exempt from the English requirement, so plan for B2 level evidence. The salary floor is the real filter. For a full breakdown of points and sponsorship, read our Skilled Worker visa guide.

Health and Care Worker: cheaper, lower floor

Nurses, doctors, allied health staff and care workers with an eligible employer use the Health and Care Worker visa instead. The fee is $350 against $3,290 for the general route, and the salary floor is GBP 25,000/yr (≈ $33,361/yr). The time counts toward settlement in the same way.

Routes with no employer

Indian citizens are on the short list of nationalities eligible for the UK youth mobility route. The India Young Professionals Scheme is for Indian citizens aged 18 to 30, and you must be selected in a ballot before you can apply. It lets you live and work in the UK for up to 24 months with no job offer. The government fee we hold for the youth mobility route is $320.

Graduates of UK universities can stay on the Graduate visa ($1,170) and then switch to Skilled Worker. Graduates of listed top universities outside the UK can use the High Potential Individual visa ($820). Researchers, founders and senior tech people with an endorsement can apply for Global Talent ($760, 2–8 months). None of these lead to settlement on their own, so most people switch to a sponsored route later.

Settlement and citizenship

Our country data records about 5 years on a qualifying route before indefinite leave to remain. For citizenship, GOV.UK says: "You can apply for citizenship if you've lived in the UK for 5 years and have had one of the following for 12 months". You also need to prove your knowledge of English, Welsh or Scottish Gaelic and have passed the life in the UK test.

If you have no UK offer, Canada and Germany do not need one to start. See the India to Canada routes, the India to US routes and the Indian to UK pathway list.
