Canada is one of the busiest lanes out of India. Our nationality data records 225,000+ (indian nationals received canadian pr in 2024). That volume cuts both ways: the routes are well understood, and the competition inside Express Entry is heavy.
The table below lists the Canadian routes an Indian citizen can apply to, with the fee, processing time and PR outcome Transita holds for each. Every figure links back to its pathway page and the official source.

Canada has no nationality-restricted work routes that shut Indian applicants out, so the full set is available. The constraint is points, a job offer or Canadian experience, depending on the route.
Route 1: Express Entry from India
If you have a bachelor's degree, skilled work experience and good English, start here. The Federal Skilled Worker stream gives permanent residence directly, with no job offer required. The government fee is $1,570 and processing runs 6–12 months after an invitation.
The language floor is CLB 7 in every ability. Indian citizens sit IELTS, CELPIP or another approved test like everyone else: Canada does not exempt any nationality. Your degree also needs an Educational Credential Assessment before it earns points.
The hard part is the draw. IRCC data (~109k invitations / ~250k pool, 2024) shows how selective the pool is. If your score sits well below recent general draws, do not wait in the pool for years. Look at routes 2 and 3, which do not rank you against the whole world.
Route 2: a provincial nomination
Provinces nominate people they want, and a nomination either adds a large CRS boost or leads to PR through the provincial stream itself. For Indian tech workers with a BC job offer, the BC PNP Tech Pilot processes in 2–5 months with a fee of $1,260. The Saskatchewan programme costs $360 and takes 4–8 months.
The Atlantic Immigration Program has no points test at all. It needs a job offer from a designated employer in one of the four Atlantic provinces, and the fee is $1,170. Our PNP guide compares the provinces in detail.

Build my workspaceRoute 3: study, then Canadian experience
This is the slower route, and the one most Indian students take. The Study Permit and PGWP cost $535 and take 2–8 months. They do not lead to PR on their own. The open work permit after graduation lets you build the year of skilled Canadian work that the Canadian Experience Class requires.
Once you have that year, CEC is the fastest PR route Canada offers: 3–6 months, a lower language floor of CLB 5, and Canadian experience points that lift your CRS score. Budget for tuition and living costs, which are far larger than any visa fee on this page.
If you already have a Canadian employer
The Global Talent Stream is an employer-driven work permit with a $175 fee and processing of 1 month. It is temporary, but the Canadian work it gives you counts toward CEC later. It only works if the employer starts the process, so it is not something you can apply for on your own.
From PR to citizenship
Canada's timeline is short once you are in. Our country data records about 2 years to permanent residence on the temporary routes, and citizenship eligibility at about 5 years of residence in total. Check how Indian nationality law treats a second citizenship before you apply for it, because that decision is made in India, not Canada.
If Canada does not work out
Indian applicants with low CRS scores often do better elsewhere. Compare the India to UK routes, the India to New Zealand guide and alternatives to Canada. The Indian to Canada pathway list and the Indian citizens hub cover every destination in one place.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the easiest way to move from India to Canada?
There is no single easiest route. If you have a degree, at least 1 year of skilled work and strong English, Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker) is the most direct, because it gives permanent residence without a job offer. If your score is too low for Express Entry, a provincial nomination or the study route with a Post-Graduation Work Permit are the usual alternatives.
Do Indians need IELTS for Canada PR?
Yes. Indian citizens are not exempt from the language test. The Federal Skilled Worker route needs CLB 7 in every ability, and the Canadian Experience Class needs CLB 5. Canada does not waive the test for any nationality, including native English speakers.
How much does Canada PR cost from India?
The government fee Transita holds for an Express Entry application is $1,570. Provincial nominations add their own fee, for example $360 for Saskatchewan and $1,260 for the BC tech pilot. Language tests, credential assessment and medicals are on top.
How long does it take to get Canada PR from India?
Federal Skilled Worker processing is 6–12 months once you apply after an invitation. The Canadian Experience Class is faster at 3–6 months, but it needs a year of skilled work done inside Canada first. Citizenship becomes possible at about 5 years of residence.
Is studying in Canada still a route to PR for Indian students?
Yes, but it is a two-step route. The study permit and Post-Graduation Work Permit ($535, 2–8 months) do not give PR on their own. The Canadian work experience you earn on the PGWP is what qualifies you for the Canadian Experience Class.
