Build my workspaceThe short version: earn at least EUR 34,188/yr (≈ $37,504/yr) from remote work for non-Spanish clients or employers, show a degree or 3 years of experience, and apply at a Spanish consulate. The government fee is $80, processing is recorded at 1–2 months, and the visa runs for up to 3 years.
The requirements
- Remote work for non-Spanish companies. The visa is for people who work remotely for employers or clients abroad, either as employees or freelancers.
- Income of EUR 34,188/yr (≈ $37,504/yr). The floor is derived from the Royal Decree on the BOE. It is an income test, not a savings test.
- A degree or 3 years of experience. The consulate page accepts an undergraduate or postgraduate degree, or at least 3 years of work experience in your current field. You need one of the two, not both.
- No job offer and no language test. Neither is part of the eligibility rules we record.
- Apostilled paperwork. The criminal record certificate must carry the Hague Apostille, and the consulate asks for it from every country you have lived in during the past 2 years.

Cost and timing
The government fee is $80. Translations, apostilles, insurance and the NIE add to that: Transita's document checklist puts the extras at roughly $600 to $1,400, depending on how many certificates you need. Plan 6 to 10 weeks before your intended arrival, since the checklist lists the criminal record certificate at 4 to 6 weeks on its own.
After approval: stay and residence
The visa is granted for up to 3 years. Time on it counts toward permanent residence: yes, about 5 years.
The tax question
Tax residence follows day counts and ties, not the visa. Spain's special flat-rate regime for new residents is the draw for many nomads, but it has conditions of its own. Our guide on digital nomad visas and tax residency covers where the line sits. This is general information, not tax advice.

The floor in Transita's catalogue is EUR 34,188/yr (≈ $37,504/yr), derived from the figure in Spain's Royal Decree on the BOE. Check the current figure on the consulate page before you apply, because it moves with Spain's minimum wage.

Up to 3 years. The route counts toward permanent residence: yes, about 5 years.
Is there a special tax rate for digital nomads in Spain?
Spain offers a 24% flat rate on Spanish-source income up to 600,000 euros for up to 6 years to qualifying new residents, often called the Beckham-style regime. It has its own conditions, so confirm with the Spanish tax agency or an adviser before relying on it.
