Can I Move to Spain as a Teacher? Visa Routes 2026

Spain's state schools hire teachers through competitive exams that most non-EU nationals cannot enter. That does not close Spain, but it changes which door you use.

Short answer: It depends

Not into the public teaching corps if you are a non-EU national: access is limited to Spanish, EU and free-movement nationals. Private and international schools can hire you through an employer work authorisation, and if you teach online for clients outside Spain, the Digital Nomad Visa fits.

The programmes that apply to teachers in Spain

Fees, salary floors and processing times below come from the official sources in Transita's visa database. Processing is an estimate from the published figure, not a promise.

Highly Qualified Professional headline floor: single national threshold, gross annual, no reduced rate.

  • Digital Nomad Visa: For online teachers and tutors working for schools or clients outside Spain. It does not cover teaching for a Spanish school.
  • Student Visa: For studying in Spain, for example the master's in teacher training that secondary teaching requires. It allows limited work while you study.
  • Highly Qualified Professional: Rarely fits teachers. It targets senior and specialist hires at large or strategic companies.

Who can teach in Spanish public schools

The Ministry of Education's page on access to the secondary teaching corps sets the nationality condition: Spanish, a national of another EU member state, or of a state covered by the EU rules on free movement of workers. Candidates whose official language is not Spanish must show adequate Spanish.

The same page requires the university master's in teacher training (Máster en Formación del Profesorado) for secondary posts. If you want to take it in Spain, the student visa covers that.

Private and international schools

A private or international school can hire a non-EU teacher through the employed work authorisation. The school applies with a signed contract, and the national employment situation has to allow the hire, either because the post is on the hard-to-fill list or because the school shows it could not fill it locally. That route is not in Transita's database, so we do not quote its fee here.

Teaching online from Spain

If your students or employer are outside Spain, the Digital Nomad Visa needs EUR 34,188/yr (≈ $37,504/yr), costs $80 and takes about 1–2 months. It can lead to permanent residence after 5 years.

Spain is one of several nomad-visa countries; the Germany digital nomad guide compares it with what Germany offers instead.

Who sponsors teachers in Spain

Transita does not hold a Spanish sponsor register. On the employed route the school is the applicant, so ask early whether it has hired non-EU teachers before and whether the post is on the hard-to-fill occupations list.

The Transita sponsor register collects the official sponsor lists we hold, so you can check an employer before you apply.
