Can I Move to Portugal as a Teacher? Visa Routes 2026

Portugal recognises foreign teaching qualifications through DGAE, but only for certain groups. If you are outside them, you can still move as a teacher, just not into the state system on your existing qualification.

Short answer: It depends

For state schools, only if you fall within DGAE's recognition procedure: EU or EEA citizens trained in another member state, Portuguese nationals trained outside the EU, and Brazilians trained in Brazil. Others can teach at private and international schools on an employed work visa, or teach online for clients abroad on the D8 Digital Nomad Visa.

The programmes that apply to teachers in Portugal

Fees, salary floors and processing times below come from the official sources in Transita's visa database. Processing is an estimate from the published figure, not a promise.

D8 Digital Nomad Visa headline floor: four times the Portuguese minimum wage, from non-Portuguese sources.

  • D8 Digital Nomad Visa: For online teachers and tutors earning from employers or clients outside Portugal. It does not cover a job at a Portuguese school.
  • Job Seeker Visa: Would let you look for a school job in Portugal, but consulates are not accepting applications at the moment. Portuguese consulates are not currently accepting applications for this visa. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists it as "NOT YET AVAILABLE AT PORTUGUESE CONSULAR OFFICES", pending regulation of Article 57-A of the Foreigners' Law. Do not plan a move around this route until that regulation lands.
  • Student Visa: For teachers who want to gain a Portuguese teaching qualification by studying in Portugal.

Who DGAE recognises

The Directorate-General for School Administration (DGAE) is the competent authority for recognising teaching qualifications. Its procedure covers EU and EEA citizens trained in another member state, Portuguese nationals trained outside the EU, and Brazilians trained in Brazil.

The page does not describe a route for other non-EU nationals. If you are outside those groups, plan on private or international schools, or on earning a Portuguese qualification, rather than recognition of the one you hold.

Private schools and the subordinate work visa

A private or international school that hires you provides the contract for the residency visa for subordinate work purposes. That visa is not in Transita's database, so we do not quote its fee or processing time.

Teaching online on the D8

If your students or employer are outside Portugal, the D8 asks for EUR 3,680/mo (≈ $50,607/yr), costs $250, takes about 2–6 months and can lead to permanent residence after 5 years.

Spain has a similar visa; the Spain teacher guide covers it alongside Spain's school rules.

Who sponsors teachers in Portugal

Transita does not hold a Portuguese sponsor register. On the employed route the school provides your contract, so ask whether it has hired non-EU teachers before.

The Transita sponsor register collects the official sponsor lists we hold, so you can check an employer before you apply.
