Short answer: It depends
Yes, if DUO recognises your qualification and a school on the IND sponsor register hires you above the Highly Skilled Migrant floor for your age. Teachers trained outside the EEA also need B2 Dutch for primary and special education.
The programmes that apply to teachers in the Netherlands
Fees, salary floors and processing times below come from the official sources in Transita's visa database. Processing is an estimate from the published figure, not a promise.
| Programme | Fee | Salary floor | Processing | Job offer | PR after |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Highly Skilled Migrant | $380 | EUR 5,942/mo (≈ $81,714/yr) | 1–2 months | Yes | 5 years |
| Orientation Year (Zoekjaar) | $215 | None set | 1–2 months | No | 5 years |
Highly Skilled Migrant headline floor: gross per month for applicants aged 30 or over, excluding holiday allowance.
Highly Skilled Migrant alternative floor: EUR 52,284/yr (applicants under 30).
Highly Skilled Migrant alternative floor: EUR 37,464/yr (reduced criterion: orientation-year and recent-graduate hires).
- Highly Skilled Migrant: The permit a sponsoring school uses to hire you. The salary floor depends on your age, which matters on teaching pay scales.
- Orientation Year (Zoekjaar): For recent graduates of Dutch programmes or top-ranked universities abroad: time to find a school, then the reduced HSM floor.
DUO recognition of your teaching qualification
To teach permanently in the Netherlands with a foreign diploma, you apply to DUO for recognition of your professional qualification. DUO checks two things: that the diploma gives you the right to teach in the country that issued it, and that the training is at least at Dutch higher-education level.
If your diploma is from outside the EEA or Switzerland, you also need Dutch at B2 (CEFR) to teach in primary and special education. Plan the language work early.
The salary question for teachers
The HSM floor is EUR 5,942/mo (≈ $81,714/yr). Lower floors in our data: EUR 52,284/yr (applicants under 30); EUR 37,464/yr (reduced criterion: orientation-year and recent-graduate hires). Teaching salaries follow pay scales, so a starting teacher may sit below the floor that applies to their age. Check the scale point in your offer against the number for your age before the school applies.
The permit fee is $380, processing takes about 1–2 months and it leads to permanent residence after 5 years.
International schools
International schools hire from abroad too, and the permit rules are the same: the school needs to be a recognised sponsor and meet the salary floor. Ask the school whether DUO recognition is required for your post before you start that process. The Netherlands software engineer guide explains the HSM permit itself in more depth.
Who sponsors teachers in the Netherlands
Search the school in IND's public register of recognised sponsors before you apply. A school that is not on it cannot file the permit until IND recognises it.
The Transita sponsor register collects the official sponsor lists we hold, so you can check an employer before you apply.
