Can I Move to the Netherlands as an Accountant? HSM Route 2026

Dutch employers hire foreign accountants on the same permit they use for engineers. The extra step only appears if you want to use the protected RA or AA title.

Short answer: It depends

Yes, if an employer on the IND sponsor register hires you at or above EUR 5,942/mo (≈ $81,714/yr) (lower floors apply by age and for recent graduates). That gets you the Highly Skilled Migrant. To call yourself a registeraccountant (RA) or accountant-administratieconsulent (AA), you also need to be entered in the NBA register.

The programmes that apply to accountants in the Netherlands

Fees, salary floors and processing times below come from the official sources in Transita's visa database. Processing is an estimate from the published figure, not a promise.

Highly Skilled Migrant headline floor: gross per month for applicants aged 30 or over, excluding holiday allowance.

EU Blue Card (Netherlands) headline floor: gross per month, excluding holiday allowance.

Highly Skilled Migrant alternative floor: EUR 52,284/yr (applicants under 30).

Highly Skilled Migrant alternative floor: EUR 37,464/yr (reduced criterion: orientation-year and recent-graduate hires).

EU Blue Card (Netherlands) alternative floor: EUR 57,048/yr (reduced salary criterion).

  • Highly Skilled Migrant: The standard route for accountants, controllers and finance analysts at a recognised sponsor. The salary floor depends on your age.
  • EU Blue Card (Netherlands): The alternative for degree holders. Same headline floor in our data, higher fee.
  • Orientation Year (Zoekjaar): For recent graduates of Dutch programmes or top-ranked universities abroad: time to find a job, then the reduced HSM floor.

The salary floor for an accountant

The HSM floor is EUR 5,942/mo (≈ $81,714/yr). The lower floors in our data are: EUR 52,284/yr (applicants under 30); EUR 37,464/yr (reduced criterion: orientation-year and recent-graduate hires). A junior accountant offer often sits close to these lines, so check the one for your age at the time the employer applies.

Processing takes about 1–2 months and the fee is $380. The employer files the application; you cannot apply for this permit yourself.

When you need the NBA register

The titles RA and AA are protected by law and can only be used once you are entered in the accountants register kept by the NBA. Accountants qualified abroad have to register too, which means passing the NBA test of professional competence.

So the question is whether the job needs the title. A controller or financial analyst role usually does not; a role where you act as an RA or AA does. Ask the employer which one you are being hired for.

Permanent residence

Both the HSM permit and the Blue Card lead to permanent residence after 5 years in our data. If you lose your job, IND gives you a limited search period to find another recognised sponsor. The permit works the same way for every profession; the Netherlands software engineer guide covers the degree question in more detail.

Who sponsors accountants in the Netherlands

Check the employer in IND's public register of recognised sponsors, under Work, before you go far in the process. If a firm is not on it, it can apply for recognition, but that adds time before your permit application can start.

The Transita sponsor register collects the official sponsor lists we hold, so you can check an employer before you apply.

Frequently asked questions

Can a foreign accountant work in the Netherlands?

Yes. Accounting roles go through the Highly Skilled Migrant permit like other skilled jobs, as long as the employer is an IND recognised sponsor and the salary clears the floor.

What salary does an accountant need for a Dutch work permit?

The headline Highly Skilled Migrant floor is EUR 5,942/mo (≈ $81,714/yr). Lower floors: EUR 52,284/yr (applicants under 30); EUR 37,464/yr (reduced criterion: orientation-year and recent-graduate hires).

Do I need to register with the NBA to work as an accountant in the Netherlands?

Only to use the protected RA or AA titles. Foreign-qualified accountants who want them must register with the NBA, which includes a test of professional competence.
