Can I Move to Germany as an Accountant? Visas and Salary Floors 2026

Germany splits accounting into two worlds: the open job of accountant, which anyone qualified can do, and the protected titles of tax adviser and auditor. Which one you mean decides how hard the move is.

Short answer: Yes

For accountant, controller and finance roles, yes: the job is not regulated, so your route is a work permit tied to an offer, usually the EU Blue Card if the salary clears EUR 50,700/yr (≈ $58,102/yr). Working as a Steuerberater (tax adviser) or Wirtschaftsprüfer (auditor) is different, because both are regulated and need German recognition first.

The programmes that apply to accountants in Germany

Fees, salary floors and processing times below come from the official sources in Transita's visa database. Processing is an estimate from the published figure, not a promise.

EU Blue Card headline floor: general 2026 minimum gross salary.

EU Blue Card alternative floor: EUR 45,934.2/yr (shortage occupations, IT roles and new graduates).

  • EU Blue Card: The best route for a degree-holding accountant with a well-paid offer. It is the fastest to permanent residence in our data.
  • Skilled Worker Visa (Qualified): The route when the offer is below the Blue Card floor. Your degree still has to be recognised or comparable.
  • Job Seeker Visa (Chancenkarte): Lets you search for an accounting job from inside Germany, then switch to one of the permits above.

Accountant is open; tax adviser and auditor are not

The federal recognition portal lists accountant (Bilanzbuchhalter) as not regulated in Germany. That means no licence is needed to be hired: the employer judges your qualification, and the immigration office only checks that your degree is recognised or comparable for the permit.

The same portal lists tax adviser (Steuerberater) and auditor (Wirtschaftsprüfer) as regulated. If you plan to sign tax returns or statutory audits, you need German recognition of that qualification on top of the visa. Most people move as an accountant first and work towards those titles later.

Which salary floor applies

The general Blue Card floor is EUR 50,700/yr (≈ $58,102/yr). A lower floor exists: EUR 45,934.2/yr (shortage occupations, IT roles and new graduates). Recent graduates can use it; for experienced accountants, check the shortage-occupation list on the official page before assuming it applies to your role.

Below both floors, the Skilled Worker Visa (Qualified) has no salary threshold in our data but takes longer to permanent residence: 4 years against 2 years on the Blue Card.

Fees, timing and German

The Blue Card fee is $120 and processing takes about 2–4 months. Neither permit requires German. In practice German helps most in roles that touch local bookkeeping and tax filings.

For the full Blue Card process, see the EU Blue Card Germany guide.

Who sponsors accountants in Germany

Transita does not hold a German sponsor register. What the permit needs is a qualifying contract from a German employer, so the useful filter is a company that has hired finance staff from abroad before and runs its finance team in English if you do not speak German yet.

The Transita sponsor register collects the official sponsor lists we hold, so you can check an employer before you apply.

Frequently asked questions

Is accounting a regulated profession in Germany?

Accountant (Bilanzbuchhalter) is not regulated, according to the federal Recognition in Germany portal. Tax adviser (Steuerberater) and auditor (Wirtschaftsprüfer) are regulated and need recognition.

What salary does an accountant need for a German Blue Card?

The general floor is EUR 50,700/yr (≈ $58,102/yr). A lower floor of EUR 45,934.2/yr (shortage occupations, IT roles and new graduates) applies in some cases, including new graduates.

Do I need to speak German to work as an accountant in Germany?

Not for the visa. Whether the job needs German depends on the employer and how much of the work touches local bookkeeping and tax filings.

Can I become a Steuerberater with a foreign qualification?

Steuerberater is a regulated profession in Germany, so a foreign qualification needs recognition before you can use the title. The Recognition in Germany portal explains the procedure.

How long until permanent residence as an accountant in Germany?

On the EU Blue Card, Transita's data puts it at 2 years. On the skilled worker permit it is 4 years.
