Germany Work Visa From India in 2026: Which Route, What It Costs, and the Steps in Order

Germany has three realistic work routes for Indian professionals. Which one you use depends on two facts: whether you already have a job offer, and what it pays.

By Senne Bels·

Every German Route Open to Indian Citizens

Every German route below is open to Indian citizens, and none of them is restricted by nationality. For a salaried job, three of them matter: the EU Blue Card, the Skilled Worker visa and the Opportunity Card.

Which one is yours?

A job offer that clears the Blue Card salary floor: apply for the EU Blue Card. A job offer below it, in a role that matches your qualification: the Skilled Worker visa. No offer yet: the Opportunity Card, then switch once you are hired.

Step 1: Get Your Degree Recognised

All three routes start from a recognised qualification. Look up your university and degree in anabin, the database German authorities use to rate foreign qualifications. If the institution or degree is not rated as comparable, you need an individual statement of comparability before the visa application. Do this first, because the visa application depends on it.

Step 2: Clear the Salary Floor, or Choose the Opportunity Card

The Blue Card salary floor is EUR 50,700/yr (≈ $58,102/yr). For shortage occupations, IT roles and new graduates, a lower floor of 45,934.20 EUR a year applies. According to BAMF, the contract or binding offer must run for at least six months.

If you have no offer yet, the Opportunity Card gives you time in Germany to interview in person. The detailed Chancenkarte guide walks through the points, and the points calculator scores your profile.

Step 3: Assemble the File and Apply

You apply for the national work visa at the German mission responsible for where you live in India, before you travel. Our Blue Card checklist suggests starting 6-12 weeks before your planned start date. The core of the file:

  • A passport valid well beyond your intended stay.
  • The signed employment contract or binding job offer, with salary and working hours.
  • Your degree certificate and the anabin printout or statement of comparability.
  • Proof of health insurance from your first day in Germany.

After arrival you register your address and convert the visa into a residence permit at the local foreigners office. The Blue Card pathway page has the full document list.

Step 4: Plan the Road to Settlement

This is where the Blue Card pulls ahead. BAMF grants a settlement permit after 27 months, or after 21 months with B1 German. The Skilled Worker visa records a longer road, about 4 years in our data.

Citizenship follows after 5 years of habitual residence, with B1 German among the conditions, according to bamf.de.

Germany Against the Other Options for Indians

Germany is cheap to apply to and fast to settle in, but you need the job before the visa. If you want to compare it with routes that do not, the Germany page for Indian citizens lists every route side by side, and the Blue Card vs Opportunity Card comparison goes deeper on that choice. For other destinations, see immigration options for Indian citizens.

Frequently Asked Questions

What salary do I need for a German EU Blue Card from India?

The general floor is EUR 50,700/yr (≈ $58,102/yr). A lower floor of 45,934.20 EUR a year applies to shortage occupations, IT roles and new graduates.

Can I go to Germany from India without a job offer?

Yes, with the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte). It lets qualified professionals enter Germany to look for work, using a points system with a pass mark of 6 points. It does not lead to residence on its own; you switch to a Blue Card or Skilled Worker permit once you are hired.

How long does a German work visa take from India?

Our data puts processing at 2–4 months for the EU Blue Card and 2–5 months for the Skilled Worker visa, after your appointment. Our checklist suggests starting 6-12 weeks ahead.

Is my Indian degree recognised in Germany?

Check it in anabin, the German database of foreign qualifications. If your university or degree is not listed as comparable, you need an individual assessment before you apply.

Do I need to speak German for a work visa?

Not for the Blue Card itself. German matters later: BAMF shortens the wait for a settlement permit from 27 to 21 months for Blue Card holders with B1 German, and citizenship requires B1.
