Frequently asked questions

What is the Germany Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card)?+

The Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card) is a one-year job-seeker visa launched in 2024 for skilled non-EU workers. Unlike the Skilled Worker visa, it does not require a German job offer at the point of application — you can enter Germany, work part-time up to 20 hours/week to support yourself, and search for a qualifying full-time role. Once you secure a sponsor, you convert to a Skilled Worker visa or EU Blue Card.

How many points do I need for the Chancenkarte?+

You need at least 6 points across 6 categories (max 14 possible). Categories: recognised qualification (max 4), work experience in your field (max 3), German language ability A1–B2 (max 4), English B2 (max 1), age under 40 (max 2), prior residence in Germany (max 1), and skilled spouse joining you (max 1). This calculator scores the first three categories from your profile; the other 4 points come from factors we can't auto-detect — your real score is usually 2-5 points higher than the estimate.

Is this calculator accurate?+

It's a conservative estimate based on age, qualification, and work experience. Critical factors not captured here include German language certification (A1 = 1, A2 = 2, B1 = 3, B2 = 4 points), English B2 (1 point), prior residence in Germany of 6+ months in the past 5 years (1 point), and skilled spouse joining you (1 point). German language is the biggest swing factor: with B2 German alone you can hit the threshold even with no work experience or recognised qualification.

What qualifications count for the Chancenkarte?+

Two paths qualify: (1) an academic qualification (bachelor's degree or higher) recognised in Germany, or (2) a foreign vocational qualification of at least 2 years that is recognised by the Bundesagentur für Arbeit (Federal Employment Agency). Check recognition status via ZAB's anabin database before applying. A recognised qualification is itself worth 4 points, so unrecognised qualifications make the Chancenkarte route significantly harder.

What happens after I arrive in Germany on a Chancenkarte?+

You have 12 months to find a qualifying full-time job. During that time you can work part-time up to 20 hours per week, including 'trial employment' for up to 2 weeks per employer to evaluate fit. Once you have a job offer at the right salary level (€48,300+/year for most roles in 2024, lower for shortage occupations), you convert to either a Skilled Worker visa or an EU Blue Card. The Chancenkarte itself cannot be extended.
