Frequently asked questions

How does the new NZ Skilled Migrant points system work?+

Since late 2023, New Zealand uses a simplified 6-point system. You claim points from one of three routes: qualification (Level 7-10, 3-6 points), occupational registration (2-6+ years training, 3-6 points), or income (1.5x-3x NZ median wage, 3-6 points). You take only the best route, not a sum. If that gives fewer than 6 points, you can add up to 3 bonus points from NZ skilled work experience. Total needed: 6 points for a direct residence application.

What replaced the old 100/160 point pool system?+

The old Expression of Interest (EOI) pool with 100/160 point thresholds was replaced in late 2023. There are no more EOI draws or waiting pools. If you score 6+ points on the new simplified system, you can apply directly for residence. This makes the process faster and more predictable.

What NZ median wage is used for the income route?+

The NZ median wage is updated annually. As of 2025, it is $35/hr NZD. The income thresholds are: 1.5x median ($52.50/hr, ~$93k/yr) for 3 points, 2x median ($70/hr, ~$124k/yr) for 4 points, and 3x median ($105/hr, ~$186k/yr) for 6 points. Your job must be in New Zealand with a New Zealand employer.

Can I use both qualification and income to score points?+

No. You choose the single best route from qualification, occupational registration, or income. They don't stack. However, you can add NZ work experience bonus points (1-3) on top of whichever route you pick, as long as your Step 1 score is below 6.

Do I need a job offer to apply?+

The SMC itself doesn't require a job offer if you score 6+ points through qualifications or income alone. However, the income route requires earning from a NZ employer, and the work experience bonus requires skilled employment in NZ. In practice, most applicants have a job offer or are already working in NZ on an AEWV (Accredited Employer Work Visa).
