Frequently asked questions
What is the UK Skilled Worker visa salary threshold?+
The standard general salary threshold for the Skilled Worker visa is £38,700 per year, set in April 2024 by the Home Office. The occupation-specific 'going rate' may be higher. New Entrants (under 26, recent graduates, or switching from a Graduate or Student visa) pay 70% of the going rate. Occupations on the Immigration Salary List get a further discount (occupation-dependent).
Does meeting the salary threshold mean I qualify?+
No. Salary is a necessary but not sufficient condition. You also need: a sponsorship licence at your prospective employer (Certificate of Sponsorship), an occupation at RQF 3 or above on the eligible roles list, English language proof (B1 IELTS or qualifying degree), and clean immigration history. This tool only checks the salary gate — Transita's full quiz checks all of them.
What if my salary is below the threshold?+
Options include: negotiating a higher salary with your sponsor, qualifying as a New Entrant (under 26 or recent graduate), finding an employer in an Immigration Salary List occupation, switching to a different visa route (Health and Care Worker visa has lower thresholds; Global Talent has no salary minimum; Innovator Founder is for entrepreneurs), or considering a temporary route like the Graduate visa or Youth Mobility Scheme.
What's the Immigration Salary List?+
The Immigration Salary List (ISL) replaced the Shortage Occupation List in 2024. Occupations on the ISL have a lower salary threshold (typically around 80% of the going rate) and reduced visa fees. The list is regularly updated by the Migration Advisory Committee — check gov.uk for the current entries.
Does this include pension or benefits?+
No. The salary threshold applies to your gross annual base salary only — not pension contributions, allowances, bonuses, share options, or benefits in kind. Use your gross annual base salary as quoted in your contract or Certificate of Sponsorship.
