Immigration Options for Ukrainian Citizens

Since February 2022, Ukrainian nationals have had access to special temporary protection schemes across the EU and UK — giving millions the right to live and work legally without a standard visa. For those planning longer-term migration or seeking a path to permanent residency, Canada, Germany, and the UK all have established regular immigration pathways in addition to the temporary protection frameworks.

🇩🇪

Germany

Temporary Protection + EU Blue Card

#1

Germany granted automatic temporary protection (until at least 2026) to all Ukrainian nationals fleeing the conflict, with full work rights. For longer-term settlement, the EU Blue Card and skilled worker visa offer PR pathways. German degree recognition includes Ukrainian qualifications from accredited universities.

🇬🇧

United Kingdom

Ukraine Schemes + Skilled Worker

#2

The UK's Homes for Ukraine scheme and Ukraine Family Scheme gave 3-year visas to Ukrainian nationals. Those with relevant skills and job offers can switch to Skilled Worker for a PR-track route after arriving.

🇨🇦

Canada

CUAET + Express Entry

#3

Canada's CUAET scheme allowed 3-year open work permits. For permanent immigration, Ukrainian professionals can apply to Express Entry (no special restrictions), and Canada's tech and healthcare sectors have been active in converting CUAET holders to permanent pathways.

🇦🇺

Australia

Humanitarian Visa / Skilled Migration

#4

Australia granted temporary humanitarian visas to Ukrainians. Skilled Ukrainian professionals can apply for standard skilled migration routes (189, 190) in parallel. Ukraine is not on any restricted-country list for Australian immigration.

Frequently asked questions

Can Ukrainians with temporary protection in Germany apply for permanent residency?

Temporary protection status (granted under the EU's Temporary Protection Directive) doesn't automatically convert to permanent residency. To stay long-term, you need to apply for a standard German residence permit — typically via employment (Blue Card or skilled worker visa) or family reunification. Those who have lived in Germany for 5+ years on a residence permit can apply for Niederlassungserlaubnis (permanent settlement permit).

Does Canada offer permanent residency pathways for Ukrainians?

CUAET itself was a temporary work authorization, not a PR pathway. For permanent immigration, Ukrainian nationals apply through standard channels: Express Entry (no special restrictions), Provincial Nominee Programs, or the Atlantic Immigration Program. Many Ukrainians with Canadian work experience have successfully transitioned to PR through the Canadian Experience Class stream.

What happens if the UK Ukraine scheme expires — can Ukrainians switch to a Skilled Worker visa?

Yes — UK visa holders (on Ukraine Family Scheme or Homes for Ukraine) can apply in-country to switch to the Skilled Worker visa if they have a qualifying job offer from a licensed UK sponsor at £38,700+. Switching is allowed without leaving the UK. This is the main PR-track route for Ukrainian professionals who want to remain in the UK long-term beyond the temporary scheme.
