Can I Move to the UAE as a Software Engineer? Visa Options 2026

The UAE has more ways in for a software engineer than most countries, and the choice comes down to who pays you: a UAE employer, your own clients, or a company abroad.

By Senne Bels··Updated 17 October 2026

Short answer: Yes

Most engineers arrive on the employer-sponsored Standard Work Visa (Employer-Sponsored), which takes 1–2 months. If you earn above AED 15,000/mo (≈ $49,013/yr) and hold a degree, the Green Visa (Skilled Worker) gives you residence that is not tied to the employer. Remote engineers working for a foreign company can use the Virtual Work Residence Visa.

  • Standard Work Visa (Employer-Sponsored): The default. The employer applies for the permit, so your status follows the job.
  • Green Visa (Skilled Worker): Self-sponsored residence for skilled employees with a bachelor's degree and a qualifying contract registered with MoHRE. Your residence does not end the day a job does.
  • Green Visa (Freelancer / Self-Employed): For engineers who contract for several clients. It rests on a freelance or self-employment permit rather than an employer.
  • Virtual Work Residence Visa: For engineers employed by a company outside the UAE who want to live in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. It needs proof of employment and a salary certificate.
  • Golden Visa: For a small group: the talent categories cover specialists in priority scientific and engineering fields, and entrepreneurs with technical projects. Most engineers will not qualify on a salary alone.

Employer visa or Green Visa?

On the standard visa your employer sponsors you and the visa is valid for 2 years. Because the employer holds the sponsorship, changing jobs means a new sponsor and a new permit.

The Green Visa costs more ($700 against $300) and runs for 5 years. You still need the job, the degree and the salary floor, but you sponsor yourself. For a senior engineer who expects to change companies, that independence is the reason to pay the difference.

Is there a Golden Visa for programmers?

Not as a named category. The official Golden Visa page lists people with exceptional talent or rare specialisations, including specialists in priority scientific and engineering fields, and entrepreneurs with innovative or technical projects. Each needs supporting evidence such as recommendation letters or accredited degrees. It does not name software roles, so treat it as a possibility to check, not a plan.

Remote engineers: the Virtual Work Residence Visa

If you keep your job with a company abroad, the Virtual Work visa asks for USD 3,500/mo (≈ $42,000/yr), costs $300 and lasts 1 year. It does not let you take a UAE employer, so it suits engineers who already have a remote contract they plan to keep.

Who sponsors software engineers in the United Arab Emirates

Transita does not hold a UAE sponsor register. On the standard visa the sponsor is simply your employer, so any company that hires you takes on that role and files the application. On the Green Visa you sponsor yourself, which is why it is the route engineers pick when they want room to change jobs.

The Transita sponsor register collects the official sponsor lists we hold, so you can check an employer before you apply.

Frequently asked questions
