Cheapest Countries for Remote Workers in 2026: Living Costs, Safety and Visa Income Floors

A cheap country only helps if you can live there legally. This guide ranks the destinations that have a remote-work visa by what it costs to live in their cheapest city, then checks that against the income each visa asks you to prove.

By Senne Bels·

Short answer: Italy is the cheapest place to live among countries with a remote-work visa, with Turin from about $600 a month. In the EU, Portugal and Spain are the cheapest nomad destinations on the cost index, and their visas lead to permanent residence.

Cost of living in every nomad-visa country

The city figure is the lowest monthly range Transita's country guide holds for that destination (read the note, as some cover rent only). The headroom column subtracts that figure from the visa's monthly income floor.

Portugal has the lowest cost index we hold at about 71. We do not hold an index figure for Italy, Thailand, France, United Arab Emirates, so compare those on the city ranges alone.

The visa floor usually covers the cheapest city

In every country here with an income floor, the floor is well above the cheapest city's monthly figure. The binding constraint for most remote workers is proving the income, not affording the rent.

Affordable and safe: scores for each nomad-visa country

Cheap and safe rarely sit together. This table puts Transita's affordability and safety scores side by side for every destination with a nomad route, ranked on the average of the two. Scores are out of 100, and a higher affordability score means a lower cost of living.

Portugal and Spain lead on the combined score. United Arab Emirates is the safest destination here at 95, with an affordability score of 60.

Stability means a visa that lasts

A cheap city is less useful if the visa keeps you on a short leash. Portugal, Spain, Germany and Italy have a remote-work route that gives you a residence clock. Thailand's DTV allows 180 days per entry with no path to residence, and the UAE's remote work permit runs 1 year at a time. If settling matters, read our ranking of nomad visas by path to residency.

Quality of life for the money: the cities we profile in full

For a fuller picture than rent, Transita's city profiles hold a comfortable single budget and a score weighted for people relocating for work. Here are the profiled cities in nomad-visa countries, cheapest first.

CityBudget for one (monthly)Transita score
Porto$1,500 to $2,40078 / 100
Lisbon$1,900 to $2,90080 / 100
Madrid$2,000 to $3,00081 / 100
Berlin$2,200 to $3,30082 / 100
Barcelona$2,200 to $3,30084 / 100
Munich$2,900 to $4,20081 / 100

Porto is the cheapest profiled city at $1,500 to $2,400 a month. Pair it with the Portugal D8 and the visa's income floor leaves a wide margin.

What these numbers leave out

Health insurance is a requirement on most nomad visas and is not in the city figures. Neither are flights, deposits or the cost of documents. Tax is the other big variable: a cheap city in a country where you become tax resident can cost more overall than a pricier one with a lighter regime, which is covered in the tax residency guide.

Transita covers 16 destinations. Popular low-cost nomad bases outside that set (Mexico, Colombia, Vietnam or Georgia, for example) are not in our data.
