Moving to Canada From the US in 2026: A 5-Stage Guide

Americans get no shortcut into Canada. You use the same 11 open routes as everyone else, and the first decision is whether you go straight for permanent residence or move on a work permit first. Here is how to make that call, and the five stages after it.

By Senne Bels·

The shared border does not create a shortcut. The TN visa people mention runs the other way: it lets Canadians and Mexicans work in the US, not Americans in Canada.

Stage 1: Decide between permanent residence now or a permit first

Canada lets you apply for permanent residence from the US without ever having lived there. 4 open skilled routes lead to permanent residence with no job offer, led by the Express Entry: Federal Skilled Worker stream of Express Entry. The alternative is to arrive on a temporary permit, build Canadian work experience, and then apply through the Express Entry: Canadian Experience Class, which is recorded at 3–6 months.

Which way round?

If your Express Entry score is competitive, apply directly: you land as a permanent resident with no employer tie. If it is not, a work permit through an employer or a study permit and PGWP buys you the Canadian experience that lifts your score. Check your number in the CRS calculator before choosing.

If a Canadian company wants to hire you, the Global Talent Stream is the fast work permit: 1 month, with a government fee of $175. It is temporary, but a year of skilled work in Canada qualifies you for the Canadian Experience Class.

Stage 2: Get your scores and documents in order

Express Entry ranks you on age, education, language and work experience. For Americans the usual work is a recognised English test, an assessment of any degree earned outside Canada, and records of your skilled work history. French adds points too. None of this is quick, so start here even before you are sure of the route.

Americans are not exempt from the language test. You sit IELTS or CELPIP like everyone else, with a floor of CLB 7 for the Express Entry: Federal Skilled Worker stream. Do not treat it as a formality: language is one of the largest blocks of points, and a top-band result can decide whether you are invited.

Stage 3: Pick a province, or let one pick you

Provincial nominee programmes draw from the same Express Entry pool, often at lower scores than federal rounds. The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program and the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program are two of the most used, with government fees of $1,080 and $360. A nomination adds a large score boost, in exchange for intending to live in that province. Two more suit people who already have an offer: the BC PNP Tech Pilot ($1,260, 2–5 months) for tech workers hired in BC, and the Atlantic Immigration Program ($1,170), which needs an offer from a designated Atlantic employer and no points score. Our PNP guide covers how the streams differ.

Stage 4: Apply and wait

Once invited, you file the full application and the processing window starts. For founders, the Start-up Visa is a separate path that needs support from a designated Canadian investor or incubator and is recorded at 12–36 months. If you are already working in Canada while your permanent residence application is processed, read whether you can keep working while you wait.

Stage 5: Land, settle, and start the citizenship clock

After landing, your permanent residence clock runs toward citizenship. Transita's registry puts the total at about 5 years from arrival. The US taxes its citizens wherever they live, so get cross-border tax advice before you move, not after. Canada's 2026 policy changes mostly hit temporary routes, which is covered in the levels plan explainer. If you are weighing Canada against other options, see best countries for Americans leaving the Canada vs US comparison, and the Australia vs Canada comparison for the other big English-speaking option. The Canada guide lists every route.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a US citizen just move to Canada?

No. A US passport lets you visit Canada, but living and working there needs a permit or permanent residence like anyone else. There is no Canadian equivalent of free movement for Americans.

Do Americans need an English test for Canadian PR?

Yes. Canada does not exempt any nationality from the language test, native English speakers included. Federal Skilled Worker applicants need CLB 7 in every ability, and a high score earns a lot of Express Entry points.

What is the fastest way for an American to move to Canada?

With a job offer in an eligible tech occupation, the employer-led Global Talent Stream is recorded at 1 month for the work permit. Without an offer, Express Entry's Federal Skilled Worker stream leads straight to permanent residence and is recorded at 6–12 months once you are invited.

How much does it cost to move to Canada from the US?

Government fees for the Express Entry streams are $1,570 in Transita's catalogue. Add language tests, credential assessment, medicals and police certificates, plus proof of settlement funds if you have no Canadian job offer. Provincial programmes such as Alberta's add their own fee ($1,080).

How long until I can become a Canadian citizen?

Transita's registry records about 2 years to permanent residence on a typical route and 5 years in total to citizenship eligibility.

Is it harder to move to Canada in 2026?

For temporary routes, yes. The 2026 to 2028 Immigration Levels Plan cut new temporary resident and student arrivals while holding permanent resident admissions steady, so a direct permanent residence route is relatively more attractive than it was.
