How to Get UK Citizenship in 2026: From Indefinite Leave to a British Passport

British citizenship is the last step of a long route. You get a visa, qualify for indefinite leave to remain, hold it for a year, then naturalise. Here is each step, with the rules from gov.uk.

The Short Answer

You can apply once you have lived in the UK for 5 years and held indefinite leave to remain (or EU settled status) for 12 months. You also need to prove your English and pass the Life in the UK test. Transita estimates about 6 years from arrival.

RequirementRule (gov.uk)
Residence5 years in the UK
Settled statusIndefinite leave to remain or settled status, held for 12 months
Married to a British citizenNo 12-month wait after indefinite leave
Absences that can make you ineligibleOver 450 days in 5 years, or over 90 days in the last 12 months
LanguageProof of English, Welsh or Scottish Gaelic

FeeGBP 1,709, or GBP 1,839 with the ceremony

Step 1: Reach Indefinite Leave to Remain

Citizenship is only open to people who are already settled. For most migrants that means indefinite leave to remain after a qualifying period on a work visa. Transita's data on the main routes:

RouteGovernment feeProcessingIndefinite leave
Skilled Worker Visa$3,2901–3 monthsAbout 5 years
Health and Care Worker Visa$3501–3 monthsAbout 5 years
Global Talent Visa$7602–8 monthsAbout 3 years
Innovator Founder Visa$1,5803–6 monthsAbout 3 years

The Global Talent and Innovator Founder routes reach settlement sooner, but both have a high bar to get in. The Skilled Worker visa is the route most people actually use.

Step 2: The 12 Months and the Absence Limits

The gov.uk citizenship page puts it like this: “You can apply for citizenship if you've lived in the UK for 5 years and have had one of the following for 12 months” The 12 months are counted from the date you got indefinite leave or settled status. If you are married to a British citizen, you do not have to wait the 12 months.

Travel is the usual problem. The same page lists more than 450 days outside the UK in the 5 years before your application, or more than 90 days in the last 12 months, as things that can make you ineligible. Keep a list of every trip with dates from the start.

The fee is per person

gov.uk lists GBP 1,709 to apply and GBP 1,839 including the citizenship ceremony. A family naturalising together pays for each adult, so price it in early.

Step 3: English and the Life in the UK Test

You must prove your knowledge of English, Welsh or Scottish Gaelic and have passed the life in the UK test. Most people already met the English requirement for their visa or for indefinite leave, but check that your qualification is still accepted before you apply.

Dual Citizenship

gov.uk confirms that dual citizenship is allowed in the UK: you can be a British citizen and a citizen of other countries. The real question is whether your current country lets you keep its nationality. The dual citizenship guide covers how the main destinations handle it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get British citizenship?

Most people need 5 years in the UK and then 12 months with indefinite leave to remain (or settled status) before applying, which is why Transita's estimate is about 6 years from arrival. If you are married to a British citizen, you can apply as soon as you have indefinite leave.

How many days can I spend outside the UK before applying for citizenship?

gov.uk lists more than 450 days outside the UK in the 5 years before your application, or more than 90 days in the last 12 months, as things that can make you ineligible.

How much does UK citizenship cost?

The gov.uk page lists a GBP 1,709 application fee, or GBP 1,839 including the citizenship ceremony.

Which UK visa leads to citizenship fastest?

Routes that reach indefinite leave to remain sooner. In Transita's data the Global Talent and Innovator Founder visas reach settlement in about 3 years, against about 5 years on the Skilled Worker visa.
