Immigration Options for Colombian Citizens

Colombia's growing tech sector and increasingly English-proficient workforce is creating new pathways for Colombian professionals in Canada, the US, and across Europe. Canada is particularly popular — Colombia is among the top Latin American source countries for Canadian PR. The US, despite H-1B lottery challenges, remains appealing for high-achievers through O-1A and EB-2 NIW routes.

Frequently asked questions

Can Colombians get a TN visa for the US?

No — the TN (Trade NAFTA/USMCA) visa is only available to Canadian and Mexican citizens. Colombian nationals must use other US work visa categories: H-1B (lottery-based), L-1 (intracompany transfer), O-1A (extraordinary ability), or employment-based green cards. Some Colombians working for multinational companies use the L-1 route from a Colombian office.

How competitive is Express Entry for Colombian applicants?

Very competitive for tech and engineering professionals. A strong CRS profile (480+ with good English, relevant experience, and a job offer if possible) places Colombian applicants in range for most general Express Entry draws. The IRCC has run category-based draws for tech workers, STEM, and healthcare that Colombian professionals have successfully used.

What German language level helps the most for German immigration from Colombia?

For the Chancenkarte, B1 German gives 1 point; B2 gives 3 points (the maximum for language). For the EU Blue Card, a job offer is needed but German language isn't required — many tech companies in Berlin operate in English. Learning Spanish to German is structurally easier than for English speakers, making German language acquisition faster for Colombian applicants.
