You opened the email, checked your scores, and now you need to know what they mean for your immigration options. IELTS bands are not just numbers. Each threshold unlocks a specific set of programs across Canada, Australia, the UK, New Zealand, Germany, Ireland, and the Netherlands.
This guide is structured by band score. Find yours, read what opens up, and follow the links to calculate your actual eligibility scores before spending money on applications.
IELTS 7.0 or Above: The Full Tier-1 Set Opens Up
At 7.0 in each band (not just the average), you qualify for the most competitive permanent residency programs in the world. This is the threshold that triggers meaningful CRS and points bonuses, not just minimum eligibility.
Canada Express Entry
IELTS 7.0 across all four components maps to CLB 9, which adds 136 points (single applicant) or 128 points (with spouse) to your CRS score for first language. At recent draw cutoffs, this language score alone can be the difference between receiving an ITA and watching rounds pass.
- Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, and Federal Skilled Trades all open
- CLB 9 scores earn the maximum language CRS points in Express Entry
- Second language bonus also available if French score meets CLB 5+

Australia Subclass 189 and 190
IELTS 7.0 in each component (not the average) earns 10 points for "Proficient English" on the Australian points test. IELTS 8.0 earns 20 points for "Superior English." The base entry requirement is 6.0 in each band (Competent English), but applicants sitting on 65 points need those 10 language points to reach the 70-75 range where invitations are currently issued.
- 189 (independent): no employer or state nomination needed; IELTS 7.0 in each band earns 10 points
- 190 (state nominated): nomination adds 5 points on top of your base score
- AHPRA and ANMAC assessments for healthcare occupations require IELTS 7.0 in each band specifically

UK Skilled Worker Visa
The UK Skilled Worker visa uses the CEFR B1 level as its English baseline for most nationalities from non-majority English-speaking countries, handled via a Secure English Language Test (SELT). IELTS Life Skills or IELTS Academic at 7.0 easily meets this. Healthcare regulators like the NMC (nurses) and GMC (doctors) require Academic IELTS 7.0 in each band separately. Average 7.0 is not sufficient. If you hold a 7.0+ Academic score, you qualify for both the visa and the regulatory registration in healthcare roles.
IELTS 6.5: New Zealand, Germany Blue Card, Ireland
At 6.5 (overall and in each required component), a distinct second tier of skilled worker programs becomes available. You still meet Competent English for Australia and CLB 7-8 for Canada, but the specific programs below treat 6.5 as a meaningful threshold.
New Zealand Skilled Migrant Category
The New Zealand Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) requires evidence of English ability. The standard IELTS requirement for New Zealand residence is overall 6.5 with no band below 6.5. The SMC uses a points ballot and has been restructured in 2024-2025 to prioritise applicants already working in New Zealand on an AEWV, but offshore skilled migrants with job offers can still apply.
- IELTS 6.5 overall, no component below 6.5, meets the standard English requirement
- IELTS 7.0 in each component earns a higher English points score within SMC
- MATES ballot (for specific occupations) has its own English criteria, check below
Germany EU Blue Card
The Germany EU Blue Card requires a recognised university degree and a job offer meeting the salary threshold (EUR 50,700 general, EUR 45,934 for shortage occupations in 2026). English language is not an official visa requirement. The language requirement is German, not English. However, many multinational employers in Germany accept English for the job itself, and several tech companies operate primarily in English. IELTS 6.5 signals a B2 English level that satisfies employers who require documented proficiency. For immigration purposes, the Blue Card has no IELTS requirement, but the job offer does.
Ireland Critical Skills Employment Permit
Ireland does not specify a minimum IELTS score for the Critical Skills Employment Permit. However, employers in regulated professions (engineering, healthcare, finance) routinely require IELTS 6.5 as proof of English proficiency. The permit leads to PR after two years and citizenship after five. IELTS 6.5 positions you well for the most in-demand roles on the Critical Skills Occupations List.
IELTS 6.0: MATES Ballot, Canada PNPs, Netherlands HSM
New Zealand MATES Ballot
The MATES (Migrant And Talent Endorsement Scheme) ballot is New Zealand's allocation system for the Accredited Employer Work Visa in specific shortage occupations. English requirements vary by occupation tier but the majority of MATES-eligible roles accept IELTS 6.0 overall. This is one of the few offshore pathways into New Zealand that does not require a pre-arranged job offer before entering the ballot.

Canada Provincial Nominee Programs
Most Canada PNP streams accept CLB 7, which corresponds to IELTS 6.0 in most components. Some streams accept CLB 5 or 6 for specific occupations. PNPs that feed into Express Entry add 600 CRS points, making a provincial nomination effectively a guaranteed ITA regardless of base CRS score.
- Ontario Employer Job Offer stream: CLB 7 minimum (IELTS 6.0 equivalent)
- Saskatchewan SINP skilled worker: CLB 7 for most NOC categories
- Alberta Advantage: CLB 5 minimum for some occupation streams
Netherlands Highly Skilled Migrant
The Netherlands Highly Skilled Migrant (Kennismigrant) permit requires a salary threshold (EUR 5,688/month under 30, EUR 4,171/month 30 and over in 2026) and a recognized employer. English proficiency is not an official requirement but most Dutch employers and the IND implicitly expect it. IELTS 6.0 is sufficient for most HSM employer applications.
IELTS 5.5 or Below: Working Holiday, Study Visas, Retake Strategy
Most direct skilled worker and PR programs require a minimum of 6.0. If your score sits at 5.5 or below, you have three practical paths: working holiday visas, study visas, or a targeted retake to reach the 6.0 threshold.
Working Holiday Visas
Working holiday visas (Australia 417/462, New Zealand, Canada IEC, Ireland, Germany) have no IELTS requirement or a very low bar. They give you 1-2 years to work, improve your English organically, and in some cases (Australia) begin building eligibility for employer-sponsored PR pathways. Australia's second and third year extensions are available if you complete regional work.
Study Visas
Most universities and colleges accept IELTS 5.5-6.0 for undergraduate and diploma programs. Studying in Canada, Australia, or the UK on a student visa builds your English, builds local credentials, and opens post-study work visa routes that eventually lead to PR without requiring a high pre-arrival IELTS score.
Retake Strategy: Getting from 5.5 to 6.0
A 0.5-band improvement is achievable in 4-8 weeks of focused preparation for most candidates. Key areas that most often drag scores below 6.0:
- Writing Task 2: addressing both parts of the question fully is the single highest-leverage change for most test-takers
- Speaking: fluency and coherence score responds quickly to structured daily speaking practice
- Reading: time management, most 5.5 readers are answering all questions but running out of time in section 3
- Consider PTE Academic, as some candidates find its AI-based scoring more predictable and achieve 6.0-equivalent scores faster
PTE and TOEFL Equivalence Table
Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK all accept PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT as alternatives to IELTS. The conversions below are approximate, so always verify against the specific program's published acceptance criteria.
| IELTS Overall | PTE Academic | TOEFL iBT | CEFR Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8.0+ | 79+ | 110+ | C2 |
| 7.0 | 65 | 94-101 | C1 |
| 6.5 | 58-64 | 79-93 | B2+ |
| 6.0 | 50-57 | 60-78 | B2 |
| 5.5 | 42-49 | 46-59 | B1+ |
Component scores matter as much as the overall
Australia, New Zealand, and most Canadian programs require a minimum score in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing, speaking), not just the overall average. An overall 7.0 with a 5.5 in writing will fail the AHPRA assessment. Always check per-component thresholds, not just the headline band.

Frequently Asked Questions
What IELTS score do I need for Canada Express Entry?
The minimum for Federal Skilled Worker eligibility is CLB 7, which corresponds roughly to IELTS 6.0 across all four components. To earn meaningful CRS language points, you want IELTS 7.0+ in each band (CLB 9). Higher scores can add 100+ points to your CRS total.
Is 6.5 enough for Australia PR?
IELTS 6.5 meets the Competent English minimum for subclass 189 and 190 applications. But it earns no English-language bonus points. To score 10 points for Proficient English on the points test, you need 7.0 in each component individually, not just an average of 7.0.
Can I immigrate with IELTS 5.5?
Most skilled worker PR pathways require at least 6.0. At 5.5, working holiday visas and student visas are the most practical immediate options. A targeted retake to reach 6.0 is usually achievable in 4-8 weeks and opens significantly more pathways.
Is IELTS or PTE better for immigration?
Both are accepted by Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. PTE Academic is computer-scored and some applicants find the results more consistent. The immigration outcome is the same if the equivalent scores align. Take practice tests in both formats and use whichever you perform better in.
How long is my IELTS score valid for immigration?
IELTS scores are valid for 2 years from the test date for Canada Express Entry, Australian skilled visas, UK Skilled Worker, and New Zealand SMC. TOEFL and PTE follow the same 2-year validity. If your score expires mid-application, you will need to retake.
