Best Countries to Emigrate Over 40 in 2026: Where Age Still Works for You

Age caps scare off more people than they actually block. Most routes have no age limit at all. The real issue at 40 and beyond is points tests, and there are good routes that do not use one.

By Senne Bels·

Three things can stand between an older applicant and a visa. A hard age cap shuts the door. A points test lets you in but scores you lower each year. A working holiday or youth route is simply not for you. Everything else treats a 45-year-old exactly like a 25-year-old, and often values the extra experience.

Routes With a Hard Age Cap

Only 3 routes open to any nationality set a maximum age in our data. All of them are points-tested permanent residence routes.

Australia's Skilled Independent (subclass 189) is the cap most people over 40 run into. If you are close to it, check on the programme page at which stage the age limit is tested before you plan the timing.

Points Tests That Penalise Age

Canada's Express Entry: Federal Skilled Worker has no cap, but the Comprehensive Ranking System awards points for age that shrink every year after 29. According to IRCC's published criteria, an applicant with a spouse gets 100 points for age at 20 to 29, 45 at 40, 5 at 44 and none from 45. Without a spouse the figures are 110, 50, 6 and none.

Can you still immigrate to Canada over 40?

Yes, but the age points have to be replaced. High language scores, a Canadian job offer or experience, French ability, or a provincial nomination can each outweigh what age costs you. A provincial nomination is the largest single boost, covered in our PNP guide.

Routes With No Age Cap That Lead to PR

These routes set no age limit in our data and lead to permanent residence. Most reward experience, salary or a sponsoring employer, which tend to favour people further into their careers.

Income-Based Routes for Later Movers

If you have savings, a pension or remote income, the passive-income and remote-work visas below test money rather than age or occupation. They suit people moving later in life.

Routes That Are Closed to You

Every working holiday and youth mobility route in our data has an age cap, the highest being under 36. They are often the first thing people find when they search "move abroad", which is part of why so many people over 40 assume the door is shut. It is only that one door.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it too late to emigrate at 40?

No. Most routes in Transita's data have no age limit at all. Only 3 routes open to any nationality set a hard cap, and the lowest of those is under 45. Points tests are the bigger issue, because they award fewer points as you get older.

Which countries have an age limit for skilled migration?

Australia's points-tested routes (subclass 189 and 190) are recorded with a cap of under 45, and New Zealand's Skilled Migrant Category with a cap of under 56. Canada's Express Entry has no cap, but its points for age fall to zero at 45.

Can I still get Canadian PR over 40?

Yes, but age works against you. Canada's Comprehensive Ranking System gives 45 points at age 40 for an applicant with a spouse and 50 without, against 100 and 110 in your twenties, and zero from age 45. Strong language scores, Canadian experience or a provincial nomination have to make up the gap.

What are the best visas for people over 50?

Routes with no age cap and no points test: employer-sponsored work permits, talent routes, and passive-income or remote-work visas. The last group suits people with savings or a pension, because it tests income rather than career stage.

Do working holiday visas have an age limit?

Yes, every working holiday and youth mobility route in our data has one, and the highest cap is under 36. They are closed to most people over 40.
