Fast-Track Permanent Residency in 2026: Countries Ranked by Years to PR

Some countries make you permanent on the day you are approved. Others make you wait five or ten years on temporary permits first. Here is every route ranked by how long it takes to reach permanent residence, using the timelines on each programme page.

By Senne Bels·

There are two different questions hiding in "fast permanent residency". The first is which routes give permanent status straight away. The second is how many years a temporary route makes you wait before you can settle. They have different answers, so this guide takes them in turn.

Routes That Grant Permanent Residence on Approval

These 13 routes skip the temporary stage. You land as a permanent resident, with the right to live, work and usually bring your family without an employer tie. The trade-off is in the processing column: deciding permanence up front takes longer.

Which country gives PR fastest?

If you qualify, a direct route is the quickest way to permanent status. Canada, Australia and New Zealand run most of them through points tests, and the United States through green card categories. The Straight to Residence is decided in 1–3 months, for example.

Temporary Routes With a Short PR Clock

The next tier is temporary permits that convert to permanent residence within three years. The shortest recorded clock is about 2 years, on routes such as the S Pass in Singapore.

10 of these 21 routes need a job offer, and that matters. On employer routes the PR clock usually counts time with an approved employer, so changing jobs can pause or reset it. Read the conditions on each programme page before you treat the headline years as fixed.

Every Country's Default Timeline to PR and Citizenship

Individual routes vary, but each country also has a typical clock. The table below uses the registry defaults behind every country guide, ranked by years to PR and then years to citizenship. Citizenship years are total years of residence from arrival, not years added on top of PR.

How to Pick Between Speed and Certainty

A direct PR route is the cleanest outcome, but it is also the hardest to get. Points tests reward age, language scores and qualifications, and invitations depend on how many others are in the pool. If your score is borderline, a temporary work permit with a short conversion clock can get you there sooner in practice.

Canada is the clearest example. A provincial nomination adds points that can lift a borderline profile into an invitation, which our PNP guide covers in detail. For processing speed alone, see the fastest residency visas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which country gives permanent residency the fastest?

Several routes grant permanent residence on approval, with no temporary stage at all. 13 of them are open to any nationality in Transita's data, including the Straight to Residence (New Zealand) and the Active Investor Plus (New Zealand). Among routes with a temporary stage first, the shortest clock is about 2 years.

Can you get permanent residency without living in the country first?

Yes. Points-based systems such as Canada's Express Entry, Australia's subclass 189 and 190, and New Zealand's Skilled Migrant Category decide permanent residence from abroad. You arrive as a permanent resident.

Which country has the quickest path to citizenship?

On the registry's country-level figures, Singapore has the shortest total timeline to citizenship eligibility, at 4 years of residence from arrival.

Is direct PR always better than a temporary visa?

Not always. Direct PR routes are usually slower to process and harder to qualify for. A temporary work permit you can get this year may beat a PR route you would wait two years to be invited to.

Do these timelines mean I will get PR?

No. They are the estimated years of qualifying residence on each route. Settlement still depends on meeting each condition at the time you apply, and rules can change during your stay.
