A points-based visa scores you on fixed criteria (usually age, education, language, work experience and a job offer) and admits you if your total clears a pass mark or ranks high enough in a pool. Transita tracks 14 points-tested routes across Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, New Zealand and Singapore.
There are two kinds. A pass-mark system admits everyone above the line. A ranked pool collects applicants and invites the top scorers each round, so the real bar moves. Several of the systems below are the second kind, sometimes with a pass mark just to enter the pool.

Canada: a ranked pool with no fixed pass mark
Express Entry scores you on the Comprehensive Ranking System. In Transita's calculator, age alone is worth up to 110 points and education up to 150 for a single applicant. IRCC then invites the top of the pool in each draw, so the cut-off changes every time. The Express Entry: Federal Skilled Worker costs $1,570 and grants permanent residence directly. Estimate yours with the CRS calculator.
Australia: a pass mark, then a ranking
The Skilled Independent (subclass 189) needs 65 points to lodge an expression of interest. Age is worth up to 30 points and education up to 20. A state nomination adds 5 for the subclass 190, and a regional nomination adds 15 for the subclass 491. Invitations go to the highest scorers per occupation, so the pass mark is a floor, not a target. Try the Australia points calculator.
New Zealand: a short scale
The Skilled Migrant Category uses a compact scale: you need 6 points, earned through a qualification or an income level, topped up by New Zealand work experience. It costs $3,900 and is a residence visa from the start. The SMC calculator runs the numbers.
Germany: points for a job-search visa
Germany's Job Seeker Visa (Chancenkarte) is points-tested too, with a bar of 6 points. It does not give residence on its own. It lets you come to Germany to find a job, then switch to a work permit. It costs $100. Check yourself with the Chancenkarte calculator.
The UK: points in name, salary in practice
The Skilled Worker Visa asks for 70 points, but the route turns on a sponsoring employer, an eligible job and a salary at or above the floor of GBP 41,700/yr (≈ $56,462/yr). The Skilled Worker checker tests that directly.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a points-based visa?
A points-based visa gives you points for things like age, education, language ability, work experience and a job offer, and admits you if your total reaches a pass mark or ranks high enough against other applicants. It replaces a case officer's judgement with a published score.
Which countries use points-based immigration in 2026?
Of the destinations Transita covers, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, New Zealand and Singapore run points-tested routes. They differ a lot: some use a fixed pass mark, others invite the highest scorers from a pool.
Is a pass mark enough to get the visa?
Not always. Australia's skilled visas have a pass mark of 65, but invitations go to the highest scorers in each occupation, so people often need more. Canada's Express Entry has no fixed pass mark at all: each draw sets its own cut-off, and the bar in our data (470 for the Federal Skilled Worker route) is a reference point that moves with every draw.
Is the UK system really points-based?
In name, yes: the Skilled Worker route asks for 70 points. In practice the route turns on three things: a sponsoring employer, an eligible job, and a salary at or above the floor of GBP 41,700/yr (≈ $56,462/yr). It behaves much more like a salary test than like the Canadian or Australian points systems.
How can I raise my points score?
Language results are often the quickest lever, because you can resit a test far sooner than you can add a year of experience. After that, a job offer, a state or regional nomination, or a further qualification. Age points fall with time in systems that score age, so applying sooner helps.
